We are offering Basic BSL/Basic Makaton sessions for children and families to attend. Our aim is to support those with hearing impairment and their families communicate comfortably and effectively. We understand that often children will learn either basic Makaton and or simplified BSL in their school and often parents and families don’t get a cost effective option to learn these skills to enable them to communicate effectively.

Family Support Wales has put together a series of sessions to support both child/adult and family in learning basic communication skills. We will offer basic Makaton as part of the sessions, but as the sessions progress we will encourage all family members to work with simplified BSL as BSL will generally be the main source of communication as your child gets older and it allows more options to develop conversations. The sessions will start with learning the basics and develop over the various sessions. We hope you will be able to have meaningful conversations with your child, be able to ask about school, discuss plans for the weekend, ask if they are feeling well, why they are upset or angry.

An example: You will learn the Makaton and BSL sign for ball, then learn the sign for park, the sign for play and the build a sentence using basic signs that can you and your child can learn and use to communicate with each other. As part of the sessions we will use pictures and signs. You will be taught to use the sign connected to the picture and various signs linked to that particular thing, place or event.

From the start we will help you develop basic Makaton/BSL skills and understanding. As the series progresses we will support you to develop these skills and understanding. Our groups are kept to a maximum of 12 per session. This small size group will allow us to support you further to ensure you have 1-2-1 help from our trainer during the sessions. The group size will allow us to develop close learning relationship with you to enable you to make the most of each session and maximise your learning.

During these sessions you will learn the basics of BSL simplified, learn to exchange words, sentences and engage with others during the session. As you and your family progress the simplified BSL will help establish a good base and foundation in BSL ready for regular use BSL as your child gets older. Our aim is to ensure you are confident and competent at the fundamentals of BSL and able to communicate comfortably with others.

Sessions are open to everyone. During the first session there will be a chance to rebook the remaining sessions.

These sessions are specifically set up for children and families. One or more of our community support staff will be present to help with the sessions to ensure everyone can benefit and learn.

Your trainer will be Jenna Evans. Jenna has a hearing impairment and is fluent in BSL and is competent at basic Makaton and BSL simplified. Her knowledge of the language and skills will mean she can offer these session confidently and with an understanding of what is important for both child and family.
